Placing YOUR Patient Journey in YOUR hands

Current Estimated

Wait Time:

4 Hours

Your Patient Journey:

What should I expect?

Upon arriving at the Emergency Department (ED), your care begins immediately with an assessment by a triage nurse who evaluates the urgency of your condition. Patients with life-threatening conditions are prioritized, while others may need to wait depending on the department's activity level. You will be seen in priority order depending upon our assessment. Please note that this may not be in the order in which you arrived.

1. First you will need to book in with reception.

2. You will then be triaged (have an initial assessment) by the triage nurse. We do this to ensure patients with the most serious concerns are prioritised appropriately.

3.  How quickly will I be seen?

The time it takes to be seen by one of our team can vary depending

upon the nature of your condition or injury, and how busy the department is but please see the estimated waiting time above. Our

aim is to see, treat and discharge (or admit) 95% of all patients within 4 hours of arrival.

Diagnostic Tests and Further Care

You may undergo diagnostic tests such as X-rays, CT scans, or blood tests. In some cases, you may be referred to a Same-Day Emergency Clinic (SDEC) for additional evaluation. Once your tests are complete, an emergency clinician will review the results and discuss treatment options, which may include discharge, outpatient referrals, or hospital admission.

Hospital Admission and Waiting Process

If admitted, you will be transferred to a ward, though sometimes you may need to wait temporarily in the waiting room or in the corridor until a bed is available. While waiting, a nurse will be available to attend to your needs. Please come to the triage nurse and let them know if:

  • You are in pain
  • You would like something to eat or drink
  • You need assistance
  • You are feeling too hot or too cold
  • Are thinking of leaving

We understand that waiting can be uncomfortable, and we apologize for any delays caused by the high demand for hospital services. If you have any concerns, please inform a member of the staff.

Considering Leaving the Department?

If you are thinking about leaving before being seen or treated, please speak with the nursing staff. They will review your situation and provide advice to ensure your safety. Leaving without appropriate medical advice could put your health at risk, so we encourage you to discuss any concerns before making this decision.
